How do I choose the right reactor capacity for my work scale?

The choice should be based on the net reagent volume and on the headspace needed for vapour condensation or substance addition. As a general analytical rule, the liquid volume should never exceed 70–75 % of the vessel's nominal capacity. For early experimental phases or high-cost reagents we offer micro and bench reactors from 250 ml to 5 litres. If you need to process small pre-industrial lots or batch validations, choose pilot-plant reactor configurations from 10 to 100 litres.

What is the difference between a glass and a stainless steel reactor, and when to use each?

The borosilicate 3.3 glass laboratory reactor stands out for its full transparency (essential to observe colour changes, phase transitions or crystallisations) and for its universal chemical resistance against strong acids. It should be used in pharmaceutical and general organic synthesis. By contrast, stainless steel reactors (AISI 304/316L) offer infinitely greater structural mechanical resistance to impacts and pressures, and allow working with extremely viscous fluids (up to 1,000,000 mPas) or industrial processes where direct visual inspection is not required.

What stirring system do I need depending on the process or sample viscosity?

For low-viscosity fluids and water-like densities (e.g. distillations or standard dissolutions), PTFE propeller-shaped stirring shafts provide fast, efficient axial flow. If working with biological suspensions, cell cultures or fluids prone to sedimentation, choose anchor-shaped paddles that sweep the reactor bottom while minimising splashing. For medium or high viscosities at pilot plant, integrate high-torque synchronous motors with folding paddle systems or high-power dispersers.

Can JP Selecta laboratory reactors work under pressure or vacuum?

Yes — all our modular pilot-plant lines (RE-605 to RE-6100 series) are technically ready as standard to operate either at atmospheric pressure or under severe vacuum conditions (useful to lower the boiling point of heat-sensitive solvents or to degas mixtures). Vacuum is maintained via stirring guides with high-friction sealed PTFE joints, flexible expansion bellows and high-vacuum greases that tolerate suction pressures down to 10⁻⁶ mm Hg with no systemic leaks.
