JP Selecta Laboratory Autoclaves

Laboratory autoclaves are pressure steam sterilization equipment used in hospitals, clinical laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry and biomedical research to inactivate microorganisms on instruments, culture media, biohazardous waste and aqueous solutions. For dry heat sterilization at temperatures above 160 °C, JP Selecta also offers a complete range of laboratory ovens.

The operating principle relies on the transfer of latent heat from saturated steam as it penetrates the load, producing irreversible coagulation of microbial proteins and disruption of cell membranes. The temperature-time-pressure relationship is standardized in ISO 17665-1 on moist-heat sterilization, validated with biological indicators based on *Geobacillus stearothermophilus* spores in accordance with ISO 11138-3.

The JP Selecta range spans from benchtop vertical autoclaves for space-limited laboratories (8 to 80 L, Autester series) to high-capacity vertical units (75 to 200 L, Presoclave series). Advanced models include post-sterilization vacuum drying, counterpressure systems for safe sterilization of liquids in sealed containers, and fast cooling to reduce cycle times. Prior sealing of loads is handled by our certified pouch sealers.

JP Selecta autoclaves cover the full clinical, pharmaceutical and food workflow: sterilization of culture media and microbiology materials, decontamination of biohazardous waste according to the CDC BMBL 6th edition, processing of medical devices and validation of processes following the WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual.

Regarding regulatory compliance, professional JP Selecta models are designed to meet Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), the FDA process validation guidance and the general chapters USP <1229.1> on direct-contact steam sterilization and USP <1229.2> on moist-heat sterilization of aqueous liquids. Each unit is delivered with IQ/OQ/PQ validation documentation, electronic signature conformant with FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and data export for auditing.

Manufactured at the Abrera plant (Barcelona, Spain) under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 13485:2018 certifications (see our quality certifications), JP Selecta autoclaves are backed by our own official technical service network of 12 centres in Spain with international calibration traceability. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a laboratory autoclave and what is it used for?

A laboratory autoclave is a device that uses high-pressure steam at elevated temperatures (typically 121-134°C) to sterilize materials, instruments, culture media, and waste. It is used in hospitals, research laboratories, pharmaceutical and food industries.

What is the difference between a benchtop and a vertical autoclave?

Benchtop autoclaves (up to 80L) are compact and suitable for small loads in space-limited laboratories. Vertical models (75-150L) offer greater capacity, advanced programs, and are ideal for liquid sterilization and large loads.

What certifications must laboratory autoclaves comply with?

JP Selecta autoclaves comply with EN 285, GMP and FDA directives, and offer IQ/OQ/PQ validation protocols. They also carry CE marking and are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2018. See our quality certifications.

How often should an autoclave be calibrated?

Autoclaves should be calibrated at least once a year, or as required by applicable regulations (GMP, ISO 17025). JP Selecta offers certified calibration service with international traceability.

What maintenance does a JP Selecta autoclave need?

Preventive maintenance includes inspection of gaskets, safety valves, temperature and pressure sensors, chamber cleaning, and vacuum system verification. JP Selecta offers maintenance contracts through its technical service network of 12 official centres.

Do JP Selecta autoclaves have a fast cooling system?

Yes, the Autester ST DRY models incorporate a fast cooling system that significantly reduces cycle times, allowing greater productivity in high-demand sterilization laboratories.

Do JP Selecta autoclaves comply with GMP and FDA regulations?

Yes, our autoclaves are designed to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and FDA regulations. We provide complete IQ/OQ validation documentation and support for performance qualification (PQ).

Do they incorporate a counterpressure system?

JP Selecta Autester models incorporate a counterpressure system, essential for safe sterilization of liquids in sealed containers, preventing deformation or breakage of containers during the cycle.

Do they have vacuum drying?

Yes, the Autester ST DRY PV models feature a vacuum drying system that ensures complete removal of residual moisture after sterilization, ideal for surgical instruments and porous materials.

What is the autoclave cycle duration?

Duration varies by program: a standard cycle at 121°C takes 20-30 minutes of sterilization, plus heating and cooling times (total 45-90 minutes). Flash cycles at 134°C are shorter.

What is the water and electricity consumption?

Consumption depends on the model and capacity. An 80L autoclave consumes approximately 2-3 kW and 5-15 liters of water per cycle. Models with recirculation systems significantly reduce water consumption.

What is the maximum autoclave temperature?

JP Selecta autoclaves reach temperatures up to 134°C (standard models) and 140°C in special models. The usual programmable range is 105°C to 134°C to cover all sterilization protocols.
